»» EDA’s Quatro Ribeiras substation commissioning, Portugal – an implementation according to
      the IEC 61850 standard

During the third quarter of 2008, Efacec concluded an implementation of a substation automation system for EDA’s Quatro Ribeiras substation (30/15 kV). EDA is an electric power production, transmission and distribution company of the Azores, Portugal.

The project included the installation of the following systems:
-
Substation automation system based on CLP 500SCC
-

Protection, from Efacec and third parties

The supplied system is based on a distributed architecture, supported by CLP 500SCC, a supervision, command, control and protection platform, made essentially by the following hierarchical levels:
-
Central unit – a central processing module, including, among others, functions for the system database management, for the communication with bay management units and for the communication with EDA’s network control centre;
-
Bay management units – integrating protection, acquisition, automation functions, as well as a distributed human machine interface and a communications local area network.

The communications between the central unit and the bay units, as well as between several bay units, are carried out through a fibre optics local network, according to the IEC 61850 standard. The Bay management units, which data model is also compatible with the same standard, assure the automation and interlocking functions, beyond the protection functions.

The system installed in this substation communicates with another substation automation system, also by Efacec, existing in the Vinha Brava substation, through the IEC 60870-5-104 protocol.

With this commissioning, Efacec reaffirms its leadership in the domestic market, within the scope of sophisticated protection, command and control systems for distribution substations.
