The second semester of the Automation School began
On the past 30th of September began the second semester of the Automation School in the scope of the Efacec Academy. This opening event took place at the Auditorium of Arroteia and included the presence of 47 employees, 4 in-house lecturers from several Business Units (Automation, Renewables, Engineering and Transformers) and a guest-speaker from INESC Porto , Professor Fernando Maciel Barbosa. This second edition of the Automation School focused on the subject of Electrical Power Systems.

This course began in September and will continue up to February 2012, including a total of 12 in-house and 11 third-party lecturers from companies such as EDP, REN, INESC and University of Manchester. Out of the 23 lecturers, 10 are doctorates/PhDs and it is estimated a wide range audience, totalizing 1788 hours of training.

The objective of this training session is to optimize the knowledge of all participants through contact with several realities, from electrical power systems to available solutions, especially state-of-the-art ones, industry trends and new mindsets, as well as real cases of implementation, in order to promote a better understanding of these matters, for the benefit of the Automation Unit’s technological and business goals.

This training is a sequence of the pilot project carried out during the first semester, also concerning the Automation School and on the subject of Automation Systems of Substations. The pilot project included 20 training modules with a duration of three months and a half.
The training sessions from the first semester included the participation of 73 trainees from the Automation Unit in Portugal, 4 trainees from the Automation Unit in Brazil, 6 trainees from Efacec Advanced Control Systems in the United States and 3 trainees from EDP Distribuição, corresponding to a total volume of 1780 hours of training. The training sessions were handled by Efacec (Automation Unit and Efacec Advanced Control Systems), as well as KEMA (Portugal, Netherlands and Italy), University of Strathclyde (Scotland), RuggedCom (Canada), PragmaSoft (Portugal) and FEUP (Engineering Faculty of the University of Porto).

Efacec gives training on Power Quality Monitoring for EDP Distribuição

In the last October 21st, Efacec Automation business unit completed the training for EDP Distribuição, the Portuguese Distribution System Operator. The training was performed in the scope of realizations of the InovGrid project, and was dedicated to the "Specification of Power Quality and Quality of Service in distribution transformer controller".

Efacec presented the newest functions and characteristics of Power Quality Monitoring available at the G Smart, the product for smart grids, applicable as distribution transformer controller. A live demonstration also took place by remotely accessing a live unit operating within an MV distribution station in the field. A set of G Smart Power Quality functions, such as registered event reports, frequency deviations, voltage magnitudes, flickers and harmonics, were include in the demonstration.

InovGrid is the major Portuguese smart grids project including the Évora Smart City. Within the inovgrid Efacec has already installed and operating more than 350 G Smarts.

The use of G Smart with built-in Power Quality Monitoring capabilities allows real-time control of Quality of Service in the distribution network. It permits alarm generation for central systems and simple access point for registered data. All collected information from several distributed G Smarts brings other capabilities in the network management, beyond the criteria in the scope of Quality of Service; moreover it allows statistic and diagnostic of disturbances, which is an added value for more demanding network requirements where the penetration of micro generation and electric vehicles is increasing.
